Our Story

At Howard Goodley’s Art Gallery, we are dedicated to preserving and showcasing the incredible talent of a remarkable artist, my seventy-three (73) year old uncle, Howard Goodley. His lifelong passion for painting and sketching began at the tender age of seven (7) and has continued to flourish ever since. Growing up in the Bronx, I had the privilege of witnessing my uncle’s artistic journey, as he would sit by the window every day, capturing the world around him with his sketch pad.

Howard’s unique approach to art allowed him to memorialize people, scenery, and everyday actions with astonishing detail and precision. His window became a portal to the world, and by the end of each day, his sketches would reflect the events and experiences he observed from his vantage point. Recently, I stumbled upon one of my uncle’s sketchbooks, which brought back a flood of memories and emotions. As I turned the pages, I discovered that he had not only immortalized contemporary scenes but had also documented vintage moments from the 80’s and 90’s.

Intrigued and inspired, I reached out to my uncle, eager to explore the possibility of sharing his remarkable work with the world. To my delight, he graciously sent me a collection of sketches he had completed during the golden era of the 80’s and 90’s. Each piece comes with a story, a testament to Howard’s passion for connecting with his subjects and capturing their essence on paper.

These portraits and sketches are a treasure trove of nostalgia, each one a glimpse into the lives of ordinary people whom my uncle would encounter during his daily commute on the #2 train from Gunhill Rd. in the Bronx to 34th Street in Manhattan. Far from being a mere observer, Howard would immerse himself in their stories, understanding their routines and schedules without intruding upon their lives. This empathy and genuine interest allowed him to find the perfect moment to create his art during the lengthy train ride.

As the bustling city of New York has evolved over the years, Howard’s artwork serves as a precious time capsule of a bygone era. Every stroke of his pencil and brush brings to life the essence of a vibrant cityscape that has undergone significant transformation since the 80’s and 90’s. Having access to such priceless material that memorializes the city during this era is truly a gift.
